Welcome to World Youth Alliance UK!

Welcome to the WYA UK and our London discussion group! We are a group of young people, students and young professionals, willing to promote human dignity in the UK. We are committed to the WYA Charter and interested in completing the Track A training programme. So far in our discussions we have looked at various articles by George Weigel, Anna Halpine, Václav Havel, and a collection of UN documents from the Cairo and Beijing conferences. We have also looked at a range of international issues from HIV/AIDS, the MDGs, globalization and development issues. Apart from that we organize regular email updates on important political and cultural news and events on topics that are relevant to the World Youth Alliance. We are thoroughly committed to building a culture of life, promoting the dignity of the human person and the importance of the family in our society!

If you would like to get more information about next meetings of the London discussion group, subscribe to the email list or find out more about the WYA training, please contact Olivia at uk@wya.net .

Discussion on hybrids, human trafficking and cell trade
WYA Workshop in Ealing

On the weekend of Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th June, around 200 young people attended a youth retreat hosted by the British organisation Youth 2000. As part of this event, an intern from the WYA office in Brussels conducted a workshop on the current European hot topic of biotechnology and human commercialisation. The discussions aroused much interest and concern about these controversial issues and many of the young people present were keen to find out more about the World Youth Alliance and its work at the international institutions. Click here for a summary of the talk.

Dinner & Drinks at Whitehall

On the evening of friday 22nd June WYA members gathered together on a beautiful riverside terrace at Whitehall Place in central London. Attending the event was European director, Emilia Klepacka, along with several members from the London National Committee. The evening, organised by WYA Europe and hosted by a friend of the Alliance in London, included a traditional English dinner served in an ornate bar lounge with a magnificent view over the river Thames. It provided the perfect opportunity for London members to meet, discuss and develop new initiatives for the development of the WYA in .

Marking the Bicentenary of the Abolition of Slavery

On 25th March 2007, we celebrated the 200 year anniversary of the day that a Parliamentary Bill was passed to abolish the slave trade in the former British Empire. If you are a WYA member, you are warmly invited to the next meeting of WYA London which will take place on Thursday the 29th March 7pm in Chelsea (near South Kensington / Sloane Square). We will be holding a discussion about the life and legacy of William Wilberforce.

Questions to consider:
What forms of slavery are still manifest in the world today?
How can these new forms of slavery be eradicated?
What campaigning methods did Wilberforce use in his campaign to end slavery would be useful for the World Youth Alliance?
Consider a modern issue that you feel passionately about. Devise a strategy of advocacy work and campaigning that would help get your message across to society, taking into consideration the methods used by Wilberforce himself.
