The Declaration on Sustainable Development describes Sustainable Development as the affirmation of human dignity. Thus, Sustainable Development has three scopes: social, economic and environmental. Social development is related to access to basic sanitation, clean water, health care, nutrition, housing and education, in addition to valuing the family — a fundamental element that encourages society to reach its potential. Furthermore, economic development is linked to education, science, innovation and good governance that does not neglect social needs. Also, environmental development calls for policies to protect the environment, since climate change and the effects of environmental degradation can threaten human dignity.

Therefore, the main focus of this publication is dealing with Sustainable Development, which can be defined as human development that seeks to preserve nature and uses natural resources without compromising the needs of future generations. Thus, the History of Stuff Project produced a series of documents that illustrate the serious consequences of the current economic system on the environment and human health. Their short films question the process that materialism imposes, so it will be described below.

First, extraction destroys natural resources, the habitat of animals and the region of native families. Then, production causes pollution that degrades the environment and affects human health. After that, the distribution of resources is unequal and society suffers from economic inequalities. Finally, in consumption, people are driven to buy non-durable products that generate more and more waste. In the last stage, the waste treatment, toxins affect the ecosystem, even when the products are recycled. In this sense, it is noticeable that this standard of living is not in harmony with human dignity, since the negative effects of each stage neglect the well-being of the present and future generation.

The described process points to the urgency of applying the logic of a holistic society, in which there is an appreciation of the interdependence between human beings and nature. From the readings of H. H. The Dalai Lama, especially “Our Global Family”, we understand the importance of interdependence through solidarity. Solidarity is the basis of our universal responsibility to ensure the protection of human dignity in all spheres of development, such as economic, environmental, social, spiritual. As a global family, we need to use universal responsibility to mitigate the negative effects of our standard of living on the environment. Therefore, we have to look for mechanisms in order to replace this system with an idea of clean production, which respects sustainability and uses green chemistry, for example. Furthermore, zero waste and innovation with renewable energy must be a central agenda to achieve structural changes in society. Given this, with solidarity, we can seek the common good of preserving nature and human development for a prosperous future.

O Desenvolvimento Sustentável e a Responsabilidade Universal
