“My conscience does not permit me to lie, or to lie down, in the face of gender ideology.”

– Amy Hamm

Since when is free expression a synonym for unprofessional conduct? The 2025 ISF on Gender Ideology may be concluded, but its contents and classroom debates are proving more relevant than ever.

In March 2025, a guilty verdict was issued against a Canadian nurse who was fired from her job for expressing her views on gender ideology. Her former employer cited that her views fell under the title of “unprofessional conduct.”

Amy Hamm was working for the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives in Vancouver, British Columbia when, in 2020, she found herself subject to an investigation instigated from public outcry about her involvement in advocating for women’s sex-based rights. “I have never once had a patient complaint, and the entire case was based solely on my conduct outside of work,” Hamm said. Hamm has been blamed for undermining the reputation and integrity of the nursing profession all because she spoke up about the gender binary.

The guilty verdict included the following line: “The panel understands that the statement that there are only two sexes — male and female — is an oversimplification that does not align with current medical or biological understanding.” As attendees of this year’s ISF learned from countless doctors, scholars, and educators, the biological binary is aligned with current medical and biological understanding, just not the ones promoted by gender ideology. “The recognition of this biological reality is reflected in the complementarity of men and women, which is essential to human flourishing and the well-being of society,” the Declaration on Gender and Human Dignity says.

“I am profoundly sorry for all regulated professionals in Canada who will be discouraged from exercising their right to free expression because of this ruling,” Hamm furthers. Amy Hamm is amongst others, like Jamie Reed who was a Panelist at this year’s ISF, who are taking a stand to challenge this rampant gender ideology and advocate for transparency in scientific research and medical care. WYA commends these courageous leaders and continues to call on young people to be compassionate defenders of the truth and stand up for human dignity and the authentic development of every person.
