Meet our WYA Interns: Natalia López-Fando

Natalia’s connection with the World Youth Alliance (WYA) began when she was around 17. Drawn to the organization’s values and mission, she became a member, and then two or three years later, she applied for the Certified Training Program (CTP). Eager to play a more active role within WYA, Natalia applied for the WYA Europe internship

“After doing the CTP I was so happy…” Natalia says, “I was delighted to be able to study another perspective of the world and that there was so much information that resonated with me. I wanted to start being a more active part of WYA. The internships had always caught my attention, but, at that moment, I never found the time to do them. So this year, when I finally managed to make the time to be more active in WYA, I did not hesitate to apply for the WYA Europe internship. It is not only an opportunity to share, learn and grow with people who have the same values, but it opens your perspective and prepares you to dialogue and move within larger institutions such as the European Parliament.”

Natalia’s role as an advocacy intern keeps her on her toes. Administrative and logistical work, networking, advocacy publications, and general organizational tasks are important parts of her position. From monitoring committees and events, news and events of the European Parliament and European Union in general, to assisting with preparations for the Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) in Zagreb, Croatia, Natalia believes that to drive substantial change, one must understand the why behind policies and decisions.

“I chose these majors [Political Science and Sociology] because they are the areas from which I want to contribute to this world. I seek to understand the why of things: the basis of our current problems in order to find solutions. I know that you can always do something to change things, no matter how small the contribution may be.”

Natalia shares encouraging words to anyone considering becoming a WYA intern, “If this is really what you like and you resonate with the values of WYA, don’t be afraid to apply! The whole team is super supportive, and they help you in everything you need. If you feel overwhelmed or lost, you can perfectly talk to them, and they are always open to listen and guide you. We are all constantly learning, so there is no reason to be afraid. The important thing is to grow in excellence: always giving your best.”
