From across the globe, WYA has made a mark for itself in promoting human dignity and training its members to be a force for its advocacy on the broad scale. WYA members are routinely chosen to speak on behalf of the organization and to explain the current political climates in their home communities. With years of experience in WYA and familiarity in international policies, our WYA members are continuing to be on the frontlines for promoting free and just societies.
In the spotlight this week is WYA member Darion Cupid from Trinidad and Tobago. Darion has been involved in WYA since 2019 and has significantly grown the WYA Trinidad chapter over the course of many years. Darion has played a vital role in the WYA mission, attending a variety of events and becoming Advocacy Academy certified.
This year, Darion was selected to represent WYA at the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States. The General Assembly will be held in Antigua and Barbuda from June 25–27, 2025. The theme is “[b]uilding resilient, inclusive economies in the Americas,” underscoring the need for inclusivity and cooperation of all citizens of the Americas. Sir Ronald Sanders, Ambassador to the US and the OAS, stated that this year’s theme will address “urgent regional concerns,” within a broader, collective framework.
The OAS grounds itself in the principles of democracy, human rights, security, and development for nations across the Americas. As of current, the OAS has 35 member states which have ratified the OAS Charter. Alongside the United Nations, the OAS is critical in international decision-making which has a major impact on policies that influence and affect the human dignity of all persons.
WYA is proud to have its members be an active presence at such an important time and looks forward to bringing the voice of its mission to the OAS this summer.
