ImageEvery year, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) celebrates World Population Day and promotes ‘Reproductive Rights and Sexual Rights and services’ around the world. Clearly these are not the real needs of most of people, especially in the developing world where basic needs such as food, water, access to education and healthcare are absent or inaccessible.

This year’s World Population Day’s theme is adolescent pregnancies. UNFPA states their mission on their website: “on this World Population Day, we raise awareness of the issue of adolescent pregnancy in the hopes of delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”

Tomorrow, on July 11th, for the occasion of World Population Day, the UNFPA will host a social media discussion on Facebook and Twitter. You can join the debate to give voice to intrinsic human dignity and ask them to address the underlying causes of teenage pregnancy by using the hastag: #worldpopday

Meghan Grizzzle Fischer, Research and Policy Specialist for World Youth Alliance, wrote a response to last years World Population Day Campaign entitled “Here’s Twenty Bucks: Don’t Have Babies”, that is available here.

Please remember that if you do join this social media debate, it is always important to share your opinions respectfully, and base them on facts.

Please learn more about the causes of Maternal Mortality by reading the World Youth Alliance’s Maternal Health Fact Sheet and Maternal Health White Paper.

The World Youth Alliance is composed of young men and women from every part of the world. In cooperation with other organs of the international community, primarily the United Nations and the European Union, the World Youth Alliance is committed to building free and just societies through a culture of life. That culture affirms the inalienable dignity of the person, defends the intrinsic right to life, nurtures the family, and fosters a social climate favorable to integral development, solidarity, and mutual respect.  Please sign our charter here to join us.
